On Tuesday, former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany hit back at the club's critics after the champions were rocked by more than 100 charges relating to Premier League financial rules.

City has been charged with alleged offenses spanning the years 2009 to 2018, with potential penalties ranging from fines to expulsion from the Premier League if found guilty.

During his 11-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium, Kompany won four Premier League titles and six domestic cups. He is now the manager of Championship leaders Burnley.

The 36-year-old Belgian has strong emotional ties to City and, while refusing to comment directly on the charges, he said it was wrong for outsiders to point the finger of blame at his former club.

"I kind of look at it and sometimes roll my eyes a little bit," Kompany said after Burnley's FA Cup win over Ipswich, when asked if the financial allegations would tarnish memories of what he achieved at City.

There is no doubt a lot of righteousness in the world that will come and tell you what you've done wrong, and then if everyone looks at themselves, I believe the football industry in general cannot afford to point the finger too many times.

"I believe you will all have a smile on your face after learning about the football industry. When people start pointing fingers, I become very skeptical. " " Do your best for yourself, and let's try to improve all the time, but I'm skeptical when fingers are easily pointed."
