VAR blunder ref Lee Mason resigns from PGMOL after 15 years as a result of the Arsenal vs. Brentford controversy.

Lee Mason, the VAR blunder referee, has resigned following his blunder in the Arsenal vs. Brentford game at the weekend.

The Mancunian is leaving the PGMOL by "mutual consent" after refs' chief Howard Webb apologized for his error and Gunners' boss Mikel Arteta vented his rage.

In the lead-up to Brentford's equalizer in Saturday's 1-1 draw at the Emirates, Mason, 51, missed an offside.

He was consequently removed from this weekend's games.

After 15 years, he has now completely departed the organization of referees.

Mason only worked on VAR after quitting the Premier League's on-pitch officiating at the end of 2020–21.

Lee Mason, the video assistant referee, reportedly left the company on their own accord, according to a statement from the corporation.

"Lee was a Premier League referee for 15 years, overseeing 287 matches in the top division. His final match occurred in the waning moments of the 2021/22 season. The 51-year-old referee officiated in more than 500 games over the course of his whole professional career after moving up to the Football League in 1998. We would like to express our gratitude to Lee for his selfless devotion to the professional game and our best wishes for the future.

His departure comes after a weekend of intense turmoil.

Prior to Ivan Toney's equalizer in the 74th minute, he allegedly forgot to draw the lines to determine whether Christian Norgaard was onside.

In an apology letter to Arsenal, the PGMOL cited human error as the cause.

Also, Howard Webb, their technical director, convened an urgent assembly of all officials.

"We closed the game with a big rage and disappointment because that wasn't a human error, that was not understanding your job and that is not acceptable," furious Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta retorted.

Arsenal lost two points as a result, and those points won't be recovered.
