The body of an ex-Newcastle midfielder was discovered in Turkey 12 days after the earthquake. Tributes have poured in for footballer Christian Atsu, whose body was returned to Ghana ten days after he was killed in a devastating earthquake in Turkey. Former Newcastle midfielder Atsu died on Saturday, according to his agent Nana Sechere, who said the player's body was discovered 12 days after the disaster struck Turkey and Syria, killing over 44,000 people.   According to the country's foreign ministry, the remains of former Ghana international footballer Christian Atsu, who died in a devastating earthquake in Turkey, were being flown home on Sunday. On February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 44,000 people in both countries. The former Chelsea and Newcastle player was reported to have been rescued the day after the earthquake, but this turned out to be false, and his body was discovered on Saturday. "The remains will be flown by Turkish Airlines to Accra (Ghana's capital) at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, accompanied by his family and Ghana's ambassador to Turkey," the foreign ministry said. According to the ministry, Atsu's older brother and twin sister were present at the site of the rescue when his body was recovered on Saturday. The 31-year-old had been missing since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of February 6 - but one of his agents has now confirmed his body was discovered beneath the rubble. 'Atsu's lifeless body was discovered under the rubble,' Murat Uzunmehmet told reporters on Saturday, 12 days after the disaster struck. Currently, more items are being removed. His phone was also discovered.' Nana Sechere, another of Atsu's agents, also announced the news.

After initial reports that the winger had been rescued, Atsu remains missing.

Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have killed over 9,000 people. In the aftermath of the tremors, Atsu, who plays for Super Lig club Hatayspor, and sporting director Taner Savut were reported missing. But it had appeared Hatayspor were able to relay positive news on Tuesday when club vice-president Mustafa Ozat said Atsu was "removed from the wreckage with injuries". Concerns remained on Wednesday, however, because the update provided to Hatayspor could not be confirmed when the club contacted the hospital. Hatayspor doctor Gurbey Kahveci said in a statement reported by Hurriyet: "[The club was told] 'He was taken to Dortyol Hospital,' and when the news came, we went and looked, but he is not there."
