After initial reports that the winger had been rescued, Atsu remains missing.

Christian Atsu, a former Newcastle player, remains missing.

Hatayspor are still looking for Christian Atsu after being told he was in a hospital following an earthquake.

Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have killed over 9,000 people.

In the aftermath of the tremors, Atsu, who plays for Super Lig club Hatayspor, and sporting director Taner Savut were reported missing.

But it had appeared Hatayspor were able to relay positive news on Tuesday when club vice-president Mustafa Ozat said Atsu was "removed from the wreckage with injuries".

Concerns remained on Wednesday, however, because the update provided to Hatayspor could not be confirmed when the club contacted the hospital.

Hatayspor doctor Gurbey Kahveci said in a statement reported by Hurriyet: "[The club was told] 'He was taken to Dortyol Hospital,' and when the news came, we went and looked, but he is not there." Unfortunately, we accept that Taner and Christian Atsu have not yet been found."

Hatayspor coach Volkan Demirel was disappointed that the initial update, which was welcomed by Atsu's former club Newcastle and the Ghana Football Association, had not been passed on.

"Please do not write that he was saved unless you are certain," Demirel told Hurriyet. "Everyone has a family. "Hopes, sorrows, and pains are growing." " There has been no word from Atsu or Taner Savut. Wouldn't I give it to them if they were in the hospital? I'll let you know as soon as I get the news."

In describing his own recent experiences, the coach added, "We've been through a lot of hard things." We dragged the people who had come to believe in me through a narrow space where even the weather would be difficult, and thankfully, they all survived.

"People are working all hours of the day and night, and I hope they are both saved. The entire team sought refuge with their families. I share everything as it becomes available."
