Messi and Co are on the danger of a Champions League elimination after Mbappe's goal is painfully overturned by VAR in PSG's 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich

KINGSLEY COMAN haunted PSG for the second time in three years as Bayern Munich advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals.

The French forward, 26, scored the game-winning goal between these two teams in the infamous behind-closed-doors 2020 Final.

However, Nuno Mendes' knee was found to be offside.

And, despite refusing to celebrate out of respect for his former club, the Paris-born star was the difference tonight in this Last 16 first-leg tie.

PSG mega-stars Lionel Messi, Neymar, and the injured Kylian Mbappe - the most expensive attacking line-up ever assembled in club football - had a frustrating night as their hopes of progressing hung in the balance.

PSG has been eliminated from the tournament four times in the previous six seasons.

If they forget their shooting boots for the trip to Bavaria on March 8, they will leave early once more.

This match was played the day after Uefa chastised Paris police for their 'defective' handling of the 2022 Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Last May, French police were accused of losing control outside the Stade de France and pepper-spraying innocent ticket-carrying Liverpool fans who had been denied entry.

Images of riot police charging Bayern fans before the game at the Parc des Princes were not something the governing body would have wanted to see.

The Ligue 1 side had suffered two consecutive defeats in the build-up, and there had been an explosive dressing-room brawl last Saturday between Neymar and a senior club official.

Christophe Galtier's tenure in the French capital is dependent on European success, and his initial tactical decision that PSG should sit back, soak up Bayern pressure, and attack on the counter-attack was not well received by the fans.

The home fans began booing as soon as the German champions took possession in the sixth minute.

However, from an attacking standpoint, the first half was devoid of any real quality, and neither goalkeeper was put in an uncomfortable position.

The visitors came closest in the 43rd minute, when a driven effort by Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich was well saved by PSG's No.99 Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Sergio Ramos of PSG was brilliant in the first half, but he went missing, along with the rest of the home defense, when substitute Alphonso Davies floated over a cross on 53 minutes.

Coman delivered a superb first-time finish with the inside of his right foot squirming underneath Donnarumma on his 50th appearance at this level.

Within three minutes, Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma kept the score low with two fine saves to deny Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, the second of which he tipped onto the woodwork, and an exceptional reaction to stop a Benjamin Pavard header.

Mbappe, who had been questionable due to a hamstring injury, came off the bench shortly after the sucker punch, and his presence lifted the entire atmosphere and added a tremendous spark.

Despite forcing one close-range save from Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer and having TWO GOALS correctly disallowed for offside, the equalizer never came.

Warren Zare-Emery, the youngest player to start a Champions League knockout game at the age of 16 years and 343 days, had a memorable night.

The English officiating crew in Paris, led by Premier League referee Michael Oliver, had a relatively quiet evening until stoppage time.

Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard received a second yellow card for bringing down Messi just outside the penalty area.

But the fact that Uefa delegated VAR duties to a Polish ref rather than an English ref speaks volumes about Uefa's regard for the Premier League's top video officials...
