The incident began when Palace's Jeffrey Schlupp knocked Casemiro's international teammate Antony off the pitch, prompting the Brazilian to push the Ghanaian off the field.

Following a 20-person melee, VAR official Tony Harrington informed the man in the middle that Casemiro's incident required further investigation using the pitchside monitor.

Marriner went to the monitor and agreed with Harrington before returning to the field to show the midfielder the red card.

According to Opta, it was the first time Casemiro had received a straight red card while playing for his former club Real Madrid or in 30 matches for the Red Devils in all competitions.

After nine years in Madrid, the 30-year-old joined Erik ten Hag's Manchester United in the summer.

He has been an important part of the Red Devils side that has made them strong favourites to reclaim their place in the crucial Champions League.

Man United were leading 2-0 at the time of the red card incident, thanks to early penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford just after the hour mark.

Following Casemiro's dismissal, Crystal Palace equalised through Ghanaian Jeffrey Schlupp, but were unable to find an equaliser, as the game ended 2-1 to the hosts. Ten Hag's side, on the other hand, had a rocky finish.

Manchester United's focus now shifts to their upcoming Premier League games against Leeds United, which they will have to face without the experience of Casemiro in the centre of the park.

For the time being, Manchester United has moved up to third place in the Premier League table, ahead of Newcastle, who play in Saturday's late kick-off.
